Why strength training can’t be optional for Runners

Whether you’re training for your first half marathon or chasing a sub-3 marathon, the ability to tolerate training load matters more than cardiovascular fitness.

Research consistently shows that appropriately dosed strength training improves load tolerance, reduces injury risk, and supports long-term running consistency (Lauersen et al., 2014; Gabbett, 2016; Bertelsen et al., 2017).

This is exactly what Built to Run is designed to address.

Built to Run was designed by Matthew Freaney, a Chartered MSK Physiotherapist with a special interest in running-related and lower-limb injuries.

With experience across both the NHS and private practice, Matthew now works exclusively in private care, supporting runners and athletes who want to train consistently without breaking down. Week after week, he sees the same pattern: runners doing some strength work — but not the right kind, or not at the right dose.

Built to Run was created to solve that problem.

Rather than high-volume gym programmes or generic online plans, Built to Run focuses on the minimum effective strength work runners need to tolerate training load — delivered in just two focused home sessions per week. Every plan is reviewed and matched based on how you’re currently running, drawing on clinical experience and current injury and performance research.

Built to Run designed to help runners stay consistent, build resilience, and keep moving forward with confidence.
